Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA) Donates Backpacks to Students
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated is the first African American Greek letter service organization in the United States with nearly 300,000 female collegiate members and alumnae in 42 states, the District of Columbia, the US Virgin Islands, the Bahamas, Germany, Liberia, South Korea, Japan, Canada, South Africa and the Middle East. It was founded January 15, 1908 on the campus of Howard University located in Washington, DC. Ethel Hedgeman Lyles was the visionary for this great sorority that has existed 110 years.
The "One Million Backpack" activity is an Educational Enrichment component under the Launching New Dimensions Program of our former International President, Dr. Dorothy Buckhanan Wilson.
Members of the Kappa Iota Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated of Garysburg, NC donated backpacks filled with age appropriate school supplies to the Central Elementary School, Monday, August 27. Representing the local chapter was Mrs. Marla H. Jerman, Vice President and Program Chairman and Mrs. Geraldine Greene, Educational Enrichment: "One Million Backpack" Chairman. Mrs. Georgette B. Kimball serves as President for this local chapter. Today, the local chapter continues to exemplify the sorority's principle, "To be supreme in service to all mankind".
